Great Sand Dunes National Park is the biggest sand box you will ever likely see.  Some of the dunes there are hundreds of feet tall, and the whole area covers many square miles.  The sand blows east across the vast San Luis Valley of southern Colorado until it runs into the Sangre De Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountains where it drops to the ground below and over time has accumulated into these huge dunes.  The dune field is visible from quite a few miles away.

It's fascinating to see and kids love it.
