Photos of Lares and the Karst country of Puerto Rico
Lares is another old town in the central mountains of Puerto Rico.  We were going to be passing through it anyway, but once we found out that this is where the funky old ice cream shop is, we definitely wanted to check it out.  When we got there, the shop was closed for the day, which crushed our spirits, especially after what a pain in the neck parking the car was.  We went ahead and took a stroll around town anyway.

Colorful mosaic map of Puerto Rico on the plaza in front of the church

Not sure if these guys are domestic or feral.  There are scroungy dogs all over the Puerto Rican countryside.
Driving through the Karst country:
The karst region of Puerto Rico is hilly with a lot of exposed rock cliffs.  Despite all the trash, the countryside of Puerto Rico is very beautiful, which makes me wonder why the locals trash it so much.  Most of their own homes seem quite tidy and well kept in general.

Nice view of karst cliffs.

Cool little waterfall by the side of one of the back roads through the karst country.

Interesting home across the road from the waterfall.

Funky old dance hall up the road from the waterfall.

They have a dragon in their yard!

Driving from Lares to San Juan.

More roadside trash, driving up a hill to a little park.

At the top of the hill, there was trash everywhere and two stray dogs.  They were glad to see us.

We gave them some leftover chicken that was in the car.  They fought over the food a bit.

When they were done, they flopped down in the shade.  I wish we could have given them more.

We made a rest stop in the town of Utuado, east of Lares.

They had this colorful amphitheater in the park.

I liked the colorful steps so I took another photo.

More trash near a park outside of Utuado.

Another lazy river wanders through the Puerto Rican hills.

As we got near to San Juan, we went to the beach at Cerro Gordo.

I walked out across a wide field of these jagged volcanic rock teeth.
